The Gallery Photogroup
Our membership is open to people of all ages. It includes those who make a living from photography, experienced amateurs and beginners who want to learn more about their hobby.
Most of our members use digital cameras and computer technology to print their pictures. Some use film for colour slides or to make pictures in a darkroom. In short, we cater for people with a wide range of photographic interests. We all strive to make our best photograph our next one without losing sight of the friendships and fun we gain from it all.
We meet on Tuesday evenings from September to May at 7.30 pm in the Southlands Centre, Ormesby Road, Middlesbrough where secure car parking is available. During June, July and August we meet on the first Tuesday of each month.
Each member is allowed a maximum of two entries in each of the print
and digitally projected image (DPI) sections of each monthly competition .
Marks are not awarded in the competitions, instead there are 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and Highly Commended (at the judge’s discretion) in both print and DPI section, with a ‘Best Beginner’ award also being made in each of these sections.
A member is judged to be a ‘beginner’ until they attain a minimum of 15 points, awarded for success in any internal competition (1st = 5, 2nd = 4, 3rd = 3, HC = 2, Best Beginner = 1 and External Award = 3 ); then they are judged to be an ‘advanced’ worker, taking effect at the start of the following season. The required points may be accrued over a number of seasons.
All prints are to be mounted on stiff card. Prints should be a maximum of 20" x 16" (50.8 x 40.5cm), including the mount, and have a print title and membership number only clearly shown on the reverse side of the mount.
Scanned transparencies may also be entered in the DPI section, as digital files. Members unable to scan slides are asked to make this known to the competition secretary, who will arrange for this to be carried out.
A digital file in .jpg format of each print and DPI entry, not exceeding 1Mb and sized at 1600 pixels wide or 1200 pixels high, must be produced. File naming must conform strictly to the format :
Category (A or B)_Membership No._ Title.jpg
for example : A_42_My Entry.jpg
All files must be placed in separate folders for Print & DPI, supplied on a Gallery or other USB flash drive, and must be received not later than the competition closing date. Entries are likely to be withdrawn if files are received late or wrongly named.
Images that are produced by any digital means and submitted for entry will only be accepted, providing that no other person’s work appears in that image, and if proof is required, then either the original file from the camera without any subsequent modification or manipulation, or the original negative/transparency should be made available.
No print or digital file should display a member’s name.
Prints or digital files that have previously been in a Gallery competition, either internal or external, shall be not be entered into this year’s series.
It is expected that all work entered into the competitions will be available for consideration for appropriate external competitions.
